ranking of the top ten manufacturers in the power semiconductor market in 2021. Among them, Infineon ranked first, Anselmi ranked second, stmicroelectronics ranked third, and Anshi Semiconductor, a subsidiary of China Wentai Technology, ranked eighth.

Omdia said that among the top ten, Infineon of Germany ranked first and Onsemi of the United States ranked second were very stable, and the ranking of the third place changed rapidly.

In 2021, Japanese companies occupied five seats in the top ten sales rankings of power semiconductor companies, namely mitsubishi electric (4th), Fuji Electric (5th), Toshiba (6th), Renesas (9th) and ROHM (10th). Besides, in the three years from 2019 to 2021, the total sales of these five Japanese companies always accounted for about 32%~33% of the total sales of the top ten.

Specifically, the number one Infineon, its sales of power semiconductors in 2021 increased by about 21.7% compared with 2020, reaching USD 4.869 billion. Although Infineon raised the chip price several times in 2021, the output of its local packaging and testing factory was also affected by the Malaysian epidemic in the third quarter of 2021 due to the shutdown of its local wafer factory caused by the winter storm in Texas in February 2021. Then, in September 2021, due to the blackout in Dresden, Germany, the output of Infineon's local fabs was also affected. These problems have affected Infineon's revenue growth in 2021 to a certain extent. However, in September 2021, Infineon's 300mm thin wafer power semiconductor chip factory in Philach, Austria officially started operation, which also helped its revenue growth.

On Mei's power semiconductor business revenue in 2021 was USD 2.051 billion, a year-on-year increase of 27.2%, ranking second. Previously, the 300mm fab of the former IBM East Fishkill factory was acquired from GlobalFoundries for $ 430m, which also helped its revenue in 2021 increase by 27% to $ 2.051m.

Stmicroelectronics's power semiconductor revenue in 2021 was USD 1.714 billion, up 52.2% year-on-year, ranking first to third. This is mainly due to the price increase effect of Italian and French semiconductor products and the expansion of production capacity. From the end of 2020 to the end of 2021, stmicroelectronics has carried out at least three price increases. In addition, in 2021, stmicroelectronics's capital expenditure will reach about 2.1 billion USD, of which 1.4 billion USD will be invested in global capacity expansion and 700 million USD will be used for stmicroelectronics's strategic plan. Including supporting the new 300 mm (12 inch) wafer factory in Agrate, Italy, the silicon carbide (SiC) factory in Catania, Italy, and the gallium nitride (GaN) factory in Tours, France.

Mitsubishi electric's sales of power semiconductors in 2021 increased by 18% year on year, reaching USD 1.476 billion. It is worth mentioning that mitsubishi electric has built a 300mm wafer factory dedicated to power and analog semiconductors near Milan, Italy, which is expected to be put into production in the second half of 2022.

Fuji Electric's power semiconductor revenue in 2021 was USD 1.173 billion, a year-on-year increase of 23.7%. In terms of production capacity, Fuji Electric has no 300mm production increase plan at present, focusing on 200mm production increase. In August 2021, Fuji Electric announced plans to invest 40 billion yen (365 million USD) to expand the power semiconductor production capacity. Among them, about 25 billion yen will be invested in the company's wafer factory in Malaysia to start producing 8-inch silicon wafers and improve production efficiency. Malaysia is scheduled to start producing power semiconductors in fiscal year 2023. The remaining 15 billion yen will be distributed to other places including Matsumoto Factory in Japan. In addition, Fuji Electric has also said that it has decided to increase the capital expenditure of power semiconductors (including the investment in SiC power semiconductors) to 190 billion yen in the context of increasing demand for electric vehicles and renewable energy.

Toshiba's power semiconductor revenue in 2021 was USD 996 million, a year-on-year increase of 13.4%. On February 4th this year, Toshiba Electronic Components and Memory Devices Company announced that it would build a new 12-inch wafer manufacturing facility in the main discrete device production base in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan (Toshiba Electronics Company of Kaga), in order to increase its current power semiconductor production capacity to 2.5 times that of 2021.

Vishay's power semiconductor revenue in 2021, like Toshiba's, was 996 million yuan, but the year-on-year growth rate was even higher, reaching 28.7%.

The power semiconductor revenue of Anshi Semiconductor, a subsidiary of Wentai Technology, was USD 672 million (about RMB 4.486 billion) in 2021, up 43.3% year-on-year, ranking one to eighth.

According to the annual report published by Wentai Technology, the revenue of its semiconductor business (including power semiconductors and discrete devices) in 2021 was 13.803 billion yuan, up 39.54% year-on-year, with a gross profit margin of 37.17% and a net profit of 2.632 billion yuan, up 166.31% year-on-year. It is worth mentioning that in 2021, AXA Semiconductor's revenue ranked 6th in the global power discrete device industry, up 3 places compared with 2020.

Renesas Electronics' power semiconductor revenue in 2021 was USD 645 million, a year-on-year increase of 27.7%. It is worth mentioning that in March, 2021, a fire broke out in N3 building (12-inch wafer production line) of Renesas' Nake factory in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, which caused great output loss for Renesas' automotive chips.

On the whole, thanks to the core shortage since the end of 2020 and the growth of new energy vehicle market, the supply of power semiconductor chips is in short supply, and the price is also on the rise, which makes the revenue of the top ten power semiconductor manufacturers in 2021 increase by more than double digits compared with that in 2020, among which the revenue of power semiconductor in stmicroelectronics has the highest year-on-year increase.

Talking about the development trend of power semiconductor industry, Sugiyama Kazuhiro, consulting director of Omdia Semiconductor, said: "The global demand for electric vehicles, wind energy, solar power generation, railway and data center power supply is increasing, and power semiconductor manufacturers are making capital investments to increase production capacity."

The forecast report of the future trend of global power semiconductors released by Yole Développement also shows that by 2026, the total scale of global power semiconductors will exceed USD 25 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 3% from 2020 to 2026. And the mobile consumer market is the largest application field of power semiconductors, which is expected to reach 11.5 billion dollars by 2026. And the application of automobile and industry grew fastest, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.0% in the same period.

Among them, in the field of electronic consumption, the main driving force for the growth of power semiconductors is the demand for standby and endurance of smart phones, while in the field of automobiles, EV's BMIC (Battery Management Integrated Circuit Module) and ADAS system will also greatly promote the development of power semiconductors. It is estimated that by 2026, pure electric vehicles will account for 30% of the total power semiconductor market.
